Collection and Conservation
Over 7800 original textiles from
147 municipalities, 34 villages,
and 181 communities. The collection represents pieces from the 19th, 20th and 21st century.
The technical team curates textiles from the collection that deepen each visitors understanding of individual piece and role the piece plays in the larger collective narrative the exhibit develops.
The team also meticulously documents, studies, cares, and conserves the pieces within the collection that includes exemplary pieces from all the indigenous communities in Guatemala, noteworthy period pieces ranging from the 19th – 21st century as well as ceremonial dress for both men and women.
A significant part of the collection exists due to private donations made over 40 years ago. Most importantly, the collection grows each year to reflect the constant evolution and transformations of designs and textiles that change to meet the needs of the individuals that use them and growing global demand for the material.
